NICOLAUS COPERNICUS IN FROMBORK

Nicolaus Copernicus almost uninterruptedly resided on the Cathedral Hill in Frombork from 1510 to the day of his death in May 1543. It was here that his greatest work ‘De revolutionibus orbium coelestium’ (‘On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres’) was written. This thesis changed the idea of the universe. The cathedral complex is also the place where famous astronomer is buried.

Copernicus’ abundant library in Frombork was plundered by Swedes in 1626. The collection was transported to the library of Uppsala University on Gustaw II Adolf’s request. That is way Sweden possesses the most valuable and the biggest collection of Copernicus’ works. These days this collection is an object of Polish-Swedish scientific projects.
