ELBLAG CANAL AND GRUNWALD VICTORY

Cruise on the Elblag Canal
ELBLAG CANAL
The longest canal in Poland, built in 1860. It uses a system of locks and inclined planes which makes it possible for boats to cross the 99 meter ground level difference between Druzno and Piniewo lakes. The Elblag Canal is listed as one of Poland’s seven wonders and one of engineering treasures.
BATTLE OF GRUNWALD
15 July 1410 – each Pole knows this date. It was when the Battle of Grunwald took place. It is the most important battle in the history of Poland and one of the biggest in medieval Europe. Polish and Lithuanian united armies brought Teutonic Order to their knees.

OLD RITUALISTS
Old Ritualists called also Old believers separated from the official Russian Orthodox Church as a protest against church reforms introduced by Patriarch Nikon between 1652 and 1666. From the middle of XVII century believing in a nigh coming of Antichrist to Earth, the Old Believers started to build their colonies in inapproachable areas.
MASURIAN SAFARI
Tarpans, fallow deer, wolfs, European bisons, horned owls, mooses and many more wild animals may be observed in the Wildlife Park in Kadzidlowo.

BOYEN FORTRESS
Boyen Fortress – located on a narrow isthmus between two large Masurian lakes – Kisajno and Niegocin. It was a strategic defensive blockading object. The fortress has a characteristic shape of a star. It was built between 1844 and 1856 to the order given by the king Frederick William III of Prussia for about 3000 soldiers.

SWIETA LIPKA
Swieta Lipka – one of the most important sanctuaries of Marian cult in Poland. The Basilica of the Visitation is an excellent example of baroque architecture in Poland. The sound and beauty of its pipe organ with 40 registers and moving figures impress the visitors to the church.

MAMERKI
Mamerki – a small village in Masuria. It is famous because of a complex of undamaged German bunkers dating back to the World War II period. The biggest bunker called ‘The Giant’ has 7 meter thick walls and ceilings. This type of bunker was usually built for Adolf Hitler.
WOLF’S LAIR
Wolf’s Lair near Ketrzyn – General Headquarters of Adolf Hitler between 1941 and 1944, erected before German invasion of USSR. The assassination attempt of Adolf Hitler took a place in Wolf’s Lair on 20 July 1944. A bomb was placed by Claus von Stauffenberg. The explosion during the meeting caused only small injuries which did not do any harm to Hitler. Adolf was saved by a solid oaken table which counteracted impact of the bomb as the meeting participants reported.

LITTLE CRACOW AND HERBAL MEDICINE

LITTLE CRACOW
Lidzbark Warminski – called “The Pearl of Warmia" and “Little Cracow" – it used to be the biggest city of Warmia and its capital. The most outstanding monument in Lidzbark is a castle of Warmian bishops. Nicolaus Copernicus resided here for 3 years.
